Review of International Literature in English: Essays on the Major Writers, edited by Robert L. Ross.

Abstract

The nearest approximation to a predecessor for this volume is probably Modern Commonwealth Literature, edited by John H. Ferres and Martin Thcker (New York: Frederick Ungar, 1977). That volume was akin to the Critical Heritage series in the brevity of what it excerpted (chiefly from journals), though instead of covering a single author it included critical material on some 140 authors. Among them were a number of nineteenth- or early-twentieth-century authors, including, from Australia, Henry Lawson, Christopher Brennan, Mary Gilmore, and Bernard O'Dowd.
