Abstract
To read Patrick White's The Living and the Dead and The Solid Mandala in sequence is to follow a writer from the experimental and the tentative towards a maturation of both style and metaphysic. It is as if he has returned to the same bi-polar evaluation of human personality, but with increased insights from the four major intermediate works.
