Abstract

We have decided to vary our usual procedure and include an editorial for this issue since Australian Literary Studies is at a point at which it faces a number of crucial decisions. The source of our predicament is the decision of the members of the current Literature Fund of the Australia Council to withdraw the funding which had sustained the journal for thirty-three years since its inception in 1963.
